Why You Should Invest in Experiences Rather Than Things

cool_beer_tour_001Most people spend money they don’t have to buy things they will use but once. Think about the outfits you have only worn once, the gadgets that are gathering dust and the expensive art sitting in the home you’re hardly ever spending time in, because you have to work hard to pay back the credit card debt. Or the expensive car you can only afford to use for your commute to work and back. Alright, perhaps that’s all a bit extreme, but you get my gist.

We’re all in a perpetual pursuit of happiness. We think that things will make us happy. But think back on your three happiest moments and you’ll find that, for the most part, they had to do with things you’ve experienced, and not stuff you bought. It is experiences that we remember, not things.

It’s fair to assume that a physical object lasts longer than a once-off experience. However, according to Dr. Thomas Gilovich, psychology professor at Cornell University, that is a flawed assumption. Dr. Gilovich says that we are happy with things until the novelty wears off and we adapt to having them in our lives. He says that we’d be better off investing our money into experiences, such as sunset boat cruises, learning to make beer or tandem paragliding.

Then why does it feel so good to spend money on things?

cruiseThe Easterlin paradox found that money buys happiness, up to a certain points. However, adaptation affects happiness. In his research, Dr. Gilovich found that people reported feeling about the same amount of happiness when they purchased material or experiential items. However, as time went by, the people reported decreased satisfaction with the material items, and increased satisfaction with the experiences they bought.

Why You Should Buy Experience Gifts

Whereas the novelty of a material item that is always closeby wears off, an unusual experience leaves you hankering for more, thus becoming ingrained in our identity. Thus, experiences become a part of who we are.

Shared experiences are particularly helpful in connecting us to other people. You’re much more likely to feel connected after taking a scenic helicopter flight with someone than you would with someone who also bought a new rug. Experiences become the stories we tell for years to come; the events we relive and bond over.

In a recent article in Experimental Social Psychology, Dr. Golovich and his co-author, Amit Kumar wrote: “By shifting the investments that societies make and the policies they pursue, they can steer large populations to the kinds of experiential pursuits that promote greater happiness.”

Therefore, it makes sense to consider investing in experiences, rather than things when you’re faced with the dilemma as to what gift to buy your spouse, your child, or your employees. Buy them an experience that will become a part of their psyche – a gift that keeps on giving.

Activity Gift Vouchers

Activity Vouchers are quite possibly the best invention ever discovered.  And from what I have heard it was born purely from a space of need.

The story goes that there was this little girl (or teenager, who knows) who had to find something to gift her Dad for his birthday.  She wracked her brains and tried her best but just couldn’t come up with a sensible gift for Dad.  Lets face it, we all get extremely tired of walking aimlessly through the shops and eventually buying the most boring gift for Dad or gifts for men for that matter.  Eventually one somehow lands up giving the man in your life a pair of socks and some cheezy looking tie!  And so because she was fed up with buying her Dad the same old gift every year, she decided to be original.  She found a beautiful box and inside the box she made a stunning voucher.  The voucher was not for cash to spend at his favourite man shop (on golf balls perhaps) but was for him to enjoy an activity voucher of sorts.  If my memory is correct, it was a Tiger Moth Vintage flight voucher that she created for him.  Now imagine his surprise when he opened the box, expecting to find another packet of sweets or his favourite pen, but instead he found an activity voucher which blew him away.  Activity vouchers are so unique to gift as extraordinary gifts.  They are guaranteed to result in some very interesting responses all of which are will make you feel a sense of amazingness all-round.

For me, the Bucket List Genie, the online gift store that I have is essentially my bucket list online.  So activity vouchers are a bit like giving someone a gift from their bucket list. We all know what a bucket list is (or a wish list) and I cannot think of a greater gift to give someone than an activity voucher directly from their bucket list. If they don’t have a bucket list (which is mandatory) then an activity voucher is the perfect way to encourage them to think about having one.

Fishing Trips in South Africa

South Africa is blessed with so many interesting activities to enjoy and because our beautiful country is surrounded by coastline it goes without saying that fishing trips in South Africa make for an interesting day out that you cannot book to enjoy when traveling to many other places.

There are so many different types of fishing trips in South Africa on offer.  One can enjoy shore fishing which is when you stand on the shore and fish from the rocks. This looks cool but my worry is always that perhaps a wave will come and wash you off the rocks.  We also offer deep sea fishing trips in South Africa whereby you are taken out on a very modern and well kitted out boat.  Here the skipper and his crew will provide you with everything that you need.  All your equipment is included to include tackle, rods, bait and of course a lovely large cooler box of cold beer.  Deep sea game fishing are definitely the most popular fishing trips in South Africa and I’ve always admired any photo that I see of a fisherman holding his prized catch.

Some of the game fish can put up quite a fight so my assumption (as a girl) would be that you need to be quite strong and manly in order to hold onto your rod while the fish is fighting until it gets tired and pulled out the water. I’ve always wanted to try a fishing trip in South Africa, I live here and have never done this before so I should probably try it before advising others just how amazing it really is. I’ve always wondering what it feels like as you are reeling in the fish and the excitement one must feel as the fish eventually comes out of the sea. It’s a bit like a prize catch and something that you can be proud of. Fishing for me is allot similar to how life works. You keep throwing your line out there in the hope to reel in a good catch. The good catch can be anything from excellent exam results, the house of your dreams, the partner of your dreams or any other opportunity that you are looking to catch.

Wine Experience Gifts

When I’m looking to purchase gifts for the special people in my life, I always consider buying couples gifts.  It makes more sense and can sometimes be more affordable.  We all like to do something with our partner and wine experiences are something that everyone can enjoy.  So when we think of wine experiences, I can only quickly think of wine tasting which after a while can become very intoxicating and also a bit drab and unoriginal.

It’s very hard to package a wine experience to include wine tasting only and so I’ve been on the hunt to find other wine experiences that my clients would enjoy.  I actually found so many which amazed me.  I’m often blown away by how many different ideas we can come up with when focusing on one concept which in this case are wine experience gifts.  One can enjoy wine tasting with cheese pairing, my sister has even enjoyed wine tasting with soups (offered in winter by one of Cape Town’s top wine estates).  I never thought that a wine experience could include soup but there is such a thing and it’s great.  Then we all know about wine tasting with the pairing of chocolate or wine tasting with food pairing which is by far the most popular.  I was told about the wine tram experience in the Winelands which I’m proud to report my clients can now enjoy.

A wine experience gift is also about learning about the wines, the different types of wines, how they are made, the vineyards, the hazards and all the intricacies that go with the processing and manufacturing of wine.  I’m starting to think that wine can be paired beautifully with any type of substance.  I haven’t heard of curry and wine tasting but who knows that’ll probably be the next unbelievable wine experience gift that one can buy.

The great thing about wine in general is that as long as you are over the age of 18, I cannot think of any adult who doesn’t actually like wine.  So if you’re stuck for the perfect activity gift, then perhaps consider a wine experience gifts for the person or couple whom you are looking to treat.

Helicopter Ride Gift Experience

If you are looking to purchase something truly unique for someone special then the helicopter ride gift experience could be exactly what you are looking for.  It goes without saying that ideal gifts for men are the hardest to purchase for which is why gift experiences make for the ideal gift.  Generally men have everything they want, from gadgets to gizmos gifts or book gifts.  When one runs out of ideas its worth considering the helicopter ride as an ideal option to gift the man in your life (or anyone for that matter).

Flights take place from the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.  Your lucky gift recipient will arrive and sign an indemnity form after which they will make their way to the heli-pad before they are strapped into the chopper and briefed before take-off.  I am yet to meet anyone who doesn’t have a helicopter ride as an item on their bucket list.  In fact enjoying a helicopter ride is a dream come true for practically everyone.  There are different durations that you can choose from with the most popular being the 15 minute ‘Hopper Ride’.  If you’d prefer a longer helicopter ride you could opt for the 20 minute, 40 minute or 60 minute ride.  The helicopter ride gift experience for 15 minutes takes in the best of what Cape Town has to offer.  Here you will enjoy the most spectacular scenery you can imagine.  With take-off from the V&A Waterfront and a circular around the Cape Town city centre then off towards our famous Table Mountain and along the spectacular coastline to include millionaire’s mile over Camps Bay, Clifton, Green Point and beyond. The taster flight offers more than enough time for clients to take special pictures and the chopper is perfectly designed so that the passenger feels as though they are surrounded by glass which enhances the sensation of openness and visibility.

So if you are struggling to find that perfect gift for someone then perhaps its worth considering the helicopter ride gift experience as the most appropriate option.  The best part of gift giving is enjoying the gift recipients reaction and this gift is sure to give you the results that you want.
